Maggie Mahoney presented a training session on tobacco control policies for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention staff and grantees in the Communities Putting Prevention to Work program funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The training was conducted as part of a national Action Institute held in San Diego, California.

Maggie Mahoney co-presented with Staff Attorney David Schaibley and Annie Tegen of Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights on effective messages and tips for using the right messengers in smoke-free policy work. The training was was conducted as part of a national Action Institute sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in San Diego, California.

Public Health Law Center Staff Attorney David Schaibley presented a training session on the legal factors to consider when drafting smoke-free policies, with the goal of minimizing the risks of litigation.  Attendees were Centers for Disease Control and Prevention staff and grantees in the Communities Putting Prevention to Work program funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The training was conducted as part of a national Action Institute held in San Diego, California.

Warren Ortland presented on smoke-free policies for affordable housing at the 2010 National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials Spring Conference in Brainerd, Minnesota.  Attendees were housing and redevelopment property owners, managers and redevelopment board commissioners.

Warren Ortland presented at the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota on the results of his recent research project on secondhand smoke and common interest communities. 

Public Health Law Center Staff Attorneys Maggie Mahoney and Warren Ortland presented a webinar on the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 to state and local tobacco control professionals in Michigan. Approximately fifty attendees participated in this webinar, sponsored by the Michigan Department of Community Health Tobacco Section.

Doug Blanke and Natasha Frost presented to 150 representatives of Minnesota health departments and tribal governments as part of the Regional Training series of the State Health Improvement Program (SHIP) (Twin Cities/metro).

Public Health Law Center Director Doug Blanke gave a presentation to the Board of Directors of ClearWay Minnesota, the Minnesota tobacco control foundation, about the expanded mission and activities of the Public Health Law Center and significant developments in global tobacco control.

Public Health Law Center Attorney Dan Stier participated in an Institute of Medicine panel discussion on “Authorities, Organization and Key Issues in (and Between) Federal, State, and Local Public Health Agencies” at the Keck Center of the National Academies in Washington, D.C.

Public Health Law Center Warren Ortland presented to SHIP grantees and landlords in Grand Rapids, International Falls and Virginia, Minnesota, on legal issues in adopting smoke-free policies.
