Tobacco Control Act of 2009

In June 2009, President Obama signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, giving the Food and Drug Administration unprecedented authority to protect the public health by regulating tobacco products. The law provides sweeping authority to the FDA to comprehensively regulate tobacco products including establishing tobacco product standards, reviewing products before their introduction to the market, restricting tobacco product marketing and advertising, preventing illicit trade, and strengthening warning labels.
