The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD or “the Department”) is proposing to amend its regulations under Section 214 of the Housing and Community Development Act, a 1980 law concerning federal housing assistance for families of mixed immigration status. If adopted, this rule would cut off housing assistance for tens of thousands of people, most of them U.S. citizen children, while simultaneously increasing costs for housing providers, local governments, and HUD itself. This rule threatens to displace families from public housing across the country, likely leading to housing instability, family separation, homelessness, and negative public health outcomes.
