Through the comprehensive (comp) planning process, public officials work with community members, local organizations, and other partners to establish a vision and articulate values for the community’s future land use, development, and growth. Comp plans lay out the goals and specific strategies that communities will use to achieve their visions. At its core, comprehensive planning is a public health activity. It promotes safe streets, access to clean water and sanitation, access to greenspaces — and it can be used to promote physical activity, environmentally responsible transportation, access to healthy foods, and healthy community design. In this way, comp plans are a powerful tool to advance community health and address all the drivers of chronic disease, for all community members.
